Modernizing the FWQ: Episode 5

Enlarging More Intermediate Blocks

I have four more intermediate blocks to share with you today.  I have altered some of the blocks to use HST instead of flying geese or economy blocks.  I know it used more pieces, but it was easier for me this way.  :)

Once again I will be sharing with you the sizes I used to rotary cut the pieces for the blocks which have been enlarged to finish at 12 inches.  For more information (and inspiring letters), please refer to the original FWQ book by Laurie Hird.

The first is FWQ block #25 Cups and Saucers (altered to use HST instead of flying geese)
  • Dark Purple: two 5 inch* squares; eight 3 inch* squares
  • Background: two 5 inch* squares; one 4.5 inch square; eight 3 inch* squares

The second is FWQ block #51 Hovering Birds
  • Light Pink: five 4 inch* squares
  • Background: five 4 inch* squares; six 3.5 inch squares

The third is FWQ block #52 Hovering Hawks (altered to use both the light and dark greens)
  • Dark Green: four 3.5 inch squares
  • Light Green: four 4 inch* squares
  • Background: four 4 inch* squares; four 3.5 inch squares

The fourth is FWQ block #80 Single Wedding Star (altered to use HST in the corners)
  • Light Blue: four 2.5 x 4.5 inch rectangles; eight 3 inch* squares
  • Background: one 4.5 inch square; four 2.5 x 4.5 inch rectangles; eight 3 inch* squares

*The 5, 4, and 3 inch cut squares are used to make HST blocks using this method.  (Tutorial is from Jeni at In Color Order.)

  1. I really like how you have simplified the piecing by using HSTs. I don't mind the extra seam, either, and I think you have set this up to be a faster chain piecing approach to the patterns.
