More Forest Friends: A Finished Quilt

I am happy to say that this quilt for my father is finished!  I made a smaller quilt with the same fabrics for my husband last March.  My dad saw it and said he wanted one just like it, but bigger.  My mom bought the fabrics last summer, but I didn't get around to cutting them until November.  I made the large blocks at the Quilt Bliss Retreat.

I finished the quilt top here at my parent's house, and quilted it with my mom's long arm machine.

I quilted it simply with a large meander to keep it cuddly.

I did the binding by machine, but cut it out at 2.25 inches instead of my usual 2.5 inches.  It worked well with the narrow pieces in the blocks.

I am so pleased with how it turned out.

There are moose, deer, bears, birds, leaves, and pine cones on the front.  There are elk on the back.

Just ignore the funny shadows on the quilt from this tree.  I was happy for some sunshine for the pictures.

Quilt Stats #171
Name:  More Forest Friends
Pattern:  Square in a Square
Fabrics Used:   Pine Ridge Panel
Amount Used:  9 yards
Batting:  Hobbs 80/20
Size:  About 60 x 80 inches
Date Finished:  January 2016
What I learned:

  • I am getting faster putting quilts on my mom's frames, but it is still much easier with a helper.

I made a drawstring bag for my dad with some of the leftover backing fabric.

However, I couldn't make just one.  Lol.  These bags are great for using up larger scraps, and I only had one left from my batches last year.

My dad loves the quilt and looks forward to using it at his cabin.  He plans to keep his headphones in his new bag, and I love seeing things I make used.

XX,
Jasmine

P.S.  I will be linking up with some of the fun parties on my sidebar.  Check them out to see what other quilters are up to.

  2. I can see why your dad wanted one of these for himself! All your missing is to use this bundled up in front of the roaring fire in the hearth - looks warm and snuggly and manly all at the same time!

  4. I am so excited to see this finish for your dad, and even more fun was being with you at Quilt Bliss when you started working on it! I still wish we had figured out a good way to get a picture of your chain piecing with the animals at the lodge.

  6. Wow, that is indeed a manly quilt with its earthy tones. I love the vignette background of the blocks - gives it an old world charm. I am sure that now someone will see it and want one too :-)

  7. Ah this reminds me of the quilt I made my dad...a flannel backing is the best. Well, next to Minky right?! Great idea for a drawstring bag and for him to put his headphones in! I especially love the photo of the quilt on the birch tree. Yay sun--I know what you mean!

  8. This is a really great quilt Jasmine! I have some fabric similar I was given from my mother in law. I was unsure how to use it. I think something like you've done is perfect!

  9. Nice! I love the shot of the quilt hanging in the tree. How nice that your Mom has a long arm so you can keep finishing projects at her place!

    1. The fabric line is called Pine Ridge. I found it at my LQS last year, but you might be able to find it on the internet. Good luck!

  11. It's so great that your Dad asked for this quilt because he loved the first one. You did a great job with it Jasmine! Love the little pouches too. Are you starting to like your Mom's longarm more than you did initially?

  12. A great 'man' quilt! Sometimes it's hard to find fabrics that are guy friendly without being childish. These are great, and your design works really well with them. I always cut my binding at 2 1/2". I find it works much better for me.
