New Design Wall

Shortly after we hung up my mini quilts, I got a new design wall.  It is my old flannel sheet taped to a one inch thick piece of foam insulation board.

It is stiff enough that I can lean it against the wall, and great for smaller quilt projects.  I am still figuring out what to do for larger projects, but here is a sneak peek at the first quilt I used it for.

I did cut the four foot wide board a little shorter to make it fit the space a little better.  When it is not being used I can hide it in my closet.

Jasmine

  1. Great way to hang the design board. And when you stated but it in the closet, I knew it was for me! My design board leans against a wall in our guest bedroom. Now it will hang from a rod and moved to a closet. The benefit, I can hang a quilt there when we have guests. Thank you.

    1. Thanks! It is not actually hanging from the clips. I just have a little scrap attached to the board and the clips to keep it from tipping over. I cut the original foam board down so that it is shorter than my closet door.

  2. That fits nicely on your wall. Does the flannel sheet stay cleaner than batting. My design wall is covered with thread. I tried to use a lint roller on it, but I would have to go through so many sheets that I gave up.

    1. Thanks! I think the flannel does stay cleaner than batting. I can easily clean off threads and dust with a couple sheets on my lint roller.

  3. I like that it is a mobile design wall. I can see that being really handy. And also - looks like the symmetrical layout might have won out! ;)

  4. Very nice! I wanna put some of that foam insulation board behind the felt I have hanging as my design wall.

  5. Hmmm, I was going to ask you about the difference between keeping flannel clean and batting clean. . . I see someone beat me to it! My batting design wall is disgusting! I do believe you have just given me the nudge I needed to get the flannel. :) Have you used batting before and if so, do you find there is a difference in how well blocks stay on the wall?

  6. Great design wall! Love the quilt you have on your wall too. Would love to know what the pattern is and which fabric line you used. Nice bright, happy colors!

  7. This is a great idea. I like that you can put it away.
I bought a zillion yards of heavy duty white felt and just thumb tacked it to two of my walls. It is really thick and stiff. I also made a light grid horizontal and diagonal lines using a light blue pencil, a ruler and a level.

  10. I have three of those foam boards covered with flannel. I use big binder clips (one for each board) at the top and hang them side by side on monkey hooks https://smile.amazon.com/Hillman-Group-121046-Gorilla-Value-Pack/dp/B00MEWLXA8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1473513317&sr=8-3&keywords=monkey+hooks

    Love your quilt.

  11. I have two of these moveable design walls. It allows me to lean one in front of the other when I don't need a large space, but I can pull them both out for bigger projects. My room isn't tiny, but it's not huge, and there's not wall space (due to wide window, closet doors, entry door being in the middle of a wall, and shelves) to have a permanent wall, but I can easily block the closet doors or shelves temporarily when I need a big design wall space.
