Squirrel!

I am interrupting my catch-up posts (14 more ready to go) to share a squirrel that really caught my attention.  I should be working on a wedding quilt for one of my nephews, but once I saw the improv pieced  quilts from the Stash Statement blog hop I had to do some improv sewing.

That pile of warm colored solid scraps quickly became this...

And this.

It really was a giant squirrel, more like an R.O.U.S. (Rodent of unusual size from Princess Bride).  I also had to turn these cool scraps...

Into this...

And this.

I have thought about calling them Flamin' Hot and Icy Cool, but my niece said the quilts reminded her Starburst and Jolly Rancher candies.  Maybe my sweet tooth is as big as hers.  I think that is what I will go with.

I am grateful for the giant squirrel because this was some very therapeutic sewing.  My heart is saddened by the Dollar Ridge Fire in Utah.  (#dollarridgefire) It continues to rage less than a mile from my father's cabin still holding all of the cabin quilts my mom and I made as well as lots of memories.  Earlier on July 4th there was a voluntary evacuation of the area surrounding the fire.  Before we were able to go and retrieve anything the evacuation became mandatory.  My parents weren't able to retrieve anything from their cabin.  I am happy to say there is still hope as more of the fire is contained every day.  We frequently check this map which shows the range of the fire.

My husband told me that it was rather ironic that my therapeutic sewing during the fire was a flame quilt.  Maybe that is why I would rather call it Starburst.

XX,
Jasmine

P.S.  I will link up with some of the fun parties on my sidebar including Oh Scrap! and the squirrel/dreami linky at MMMquilts.  I normally can resist squirrels, so that is a first for me.

  3. I hope the fire can be contained before it reaches your parents cabin. The therapeutic sewing is beautiful, Jasmine, and I don't know if I could choose between the warm or cool as a favorite.

  4. Oh dear I hope that fire gets contained soon and that the cabin and it's belongings are safe. I love the quilts you created during this stressful time. Especially love the cool one! Will you border the cool one or leave as is?

  7. Two beautiful squirrels!! And I like your original names. :-) But I’m sorry about the fire threatening your parents’ cabin; I remember well the lovely cabin quilts you’ve made for it. I do hope you will link this up at the end of the month with DrEAMi!

  10. Beautiful quilts! Your original names made me immediately think "Fire and Ice" for names. But then continuing to read about the fire, maybe not! I hope the fire is contained and your quilts are safe.
