HST Quilt ~ Finished!

I am thrilled that my Half Square Triangle Sampler quilt is finally finished.  If I am being honest, I would say that I started it three years ago while sewing in my mom's basement.  For some reason this quilt was hard for me to finish.  I sewed the HST by sewing around all four sides of a square and cutting an X through the square.  First I put it aside because I had to square up every 2.5 inch finished HST.  Then I put it aside because all the HST were on the bias .  One thing led to another and I finally finished it.  Perfect isn't flawless, perfect is finished.  Right?

I quilted it on my Tiara with large flowers.  It was the first time I had used the Tiara in 10 months.  It deserved some attention.

Bunny tested it out for me right after it was quilted.

The binding was sewn to the top, clipped, then stitched to the back by hand.

It is the same binding as the original quilt this was the leftovers from.

It is also the same backing as Dancing Daisies.

Dancing Daisies, with blocks hand pieced, actually took less time start to finish than this one

From a plan...

To a reality...

I'm so glad it is finished.  This one will hang upstairs on the landing for the month of April, or in my studio whenever I feel like it.

Falling Leaves

This is my Falling Leaves quilt which will hang by my stairs for the month of November.  I drafted this quilt over a year ago.  It feels good to have it made.  Maybe sometime I can make the other two I planned at the same time.

My quilt was heavily inspired by this beautiful quilt made by Carla at Grace and Favor.  Hers is a queen size quilt with mostly large leaves.  Mine is a wall hanging (finishing at 34 by 46 inches) with six inch leaves.  Many of the leaf fabrics were scraps from other projects, so I used the Easy Angle Ruler to make the HST out of 2.5 inch strips.

I pieced it in November 2018, but it sat on my design wall like this for awhile.  There were too many leaves facing the bottom right.  A couple months later I finally rotated one of the leaves.

I liked it a lot better that way.  After the unpicking and re-sewing was done, it was easy to get it on the longarm to quilt.

I quilted it with spirals because that feels like wind to me.

My favorite part of the quilt is the binding which mimics the changing colors of the leaves.  That was my own design decision.  Carla's quilt has the same binding as her background.

I pressed the binding away from the quilt before stitching it to the back by hand.

The backing is a cute print which contains many of the colors of the leaves and binding.

I'm so excited to hang it up this year, but for now I have been enjoying it in my studio.

Free-Motion Fantasy

This panel was designed by Amanda Murphy and was only available to Bernina Dealers.  She mentioned it here on her blog. I was able to purchase it from my dealer when I took a class from her with my mom.

I had a lot of fun quilting it up on my domestic sewing machine.  It is easier for me to quilt following a line while sitting down instead of on the long arm.

Panda doesn't like seeing the dots and arrows which tell you where to quilt.

I told him to back up and look at the whole quilt.

This is a quilt that does look better at a distance.

The backing is a Riley Blake aqua from my stash.  It matched the front very well.

The binding was leftover from one of my niece's quilts.

I think the butterfly was my favorite part.

I named the quilt Free-Motion Fantasy because that is the name of her newest fabric line which reminds me of the panel.

The quilt finishes about 36 x 50 inches.

Pleasantly Purple

I made this quilt as a sample to hang at my local quilt shop.  It will advertise my new free-motion quilting class which is an intermediate level.  I will teach it for the first time in April.

The layout for this FMQ sampler was inspired by one made by Amanda Murphy.

I saw her quilt when I took a class from her last year.  I simplified it by just using a solid block, but liked how the sashings and borders had different designs.

I quilted this on the Bernina Q24.  I used Amanda's method of quilting everything in the ditch to stabilize the quilt and then rolling back and forth to fill everything else in.

The binding is the same dark purple as the cornerstones.  I stitched it to the back by hand and added a label.

The backing is a lighter purple solid.

It was a little nerve wracking quilting with a high contrast thread.  Every mistake shows, but I didn't do any unpicking.

It doesn't look too bad from a distance.  ;)

In my class I will be teaching pebbles, spirals, paisleys, hearts, flowers, leaves, feathers, and combining designs.  I'm really looking forward to it.

My Mom's Zen Suedle

I mentioned earlier that my mom also took the Sue Patten class with me.  As part of the class she designed her own Zen Doodle/Suedle quilt.  She used stencils and traced rulers for her design.

I offered to quilt it for her and changed a few things along the way.  I quilted this on my Baby Lock Tiara so that I could quilt by color.  First, I quilted all the blue and teal that she wanted.

Then I added in the hot pink.

The background was filled last.  I did some wild quilting with different motifs including hearts, hooked spirals, flowers, and paisleys.  It went a lot faster than I was expecting.

I even added the binding for for my mom. It is a blue Northcott almost solid print.

I was pleased that even though I quilted by color and not from the center out that there were no tucks on the back.

The top fabric really is Kona Black, but I found it hard to photograh.

The back is the same as my Zen Suedle quilt, Fire and Ice.

 Here are some close-ups.

This really was a fun quilt to make for my mom.  If you enjoy free-motion quilting, you might really enjoy making a Zen Doodle/Suedle quilt.  Sue Patten recommends using a solid black or other very dark fabric for the top and adding color with threads.

My mom plans on hanging this quilt (which is about 42 by 54 inches) in her basement sewing room.
