I didn't think I would have much to blog about this month, but I already finished another quilt. Then I couldn't resist blogging about it. ;)
I won a layer cake from one of Jennie's giveaways, and I selected Solstice by Kate Spain. Jennie ordered it from the Red Chair Quilting etsy shop, and Tiffany sent a few extra goodies. I was happily surprised (once Jennie told me it wasn't a mistake). It came in the mail on Monday.
My first thought was to make a plus quilt, then I spent couple days looking at layer cake and charm pack patterns. I nearly made a four patch quilt with sashing, but decided to make a plus quilt at the last minute. I'm so glad that I did. It was an excellent use of the layer cake and matching charm pack. I used all but two charms and made my favorite size lap quilt. It is about 59 x 72 inches.
Here it is up on my design wall on Wednesday night.
The top went together very quickly Thursday morning.
And I was able to get it basted that afternoon before we took the older boys to see the Mormon Tabernacle Choir perform with the Sesame Street Muppets. (Totally awesome, by the way.)
Friday morning I got it quilted and worked on the binding that afternoon during nap time. I ran out of bobbin with less than a half inch to go when top stitching the binding.
I finished it up and did the handwork on the label.
I said, "It's finished!" 15 seconds later it was swiped out of my hands to be tested by Cheetah.
The minky thief has tried to convince me that this should be out year round. But I think it really is a Christmas Quilt.
We had to strike a deal so that I could use the quilt for a little bit just to take pictures. We really love minky here!
I quilted it simply with a meandering design. And it was the first time I could see little bits of minky from the top. It doesn't bother me, because you don't notice it from farther back.
All in all, I am so pleased with how it turned out. Thank you Jennie and Tiffany!
I was thinking of calling it "Positively Christmas," but when I discussed it with my husband he suggested, "Christmas Addition." He really liked the play on words, and that is the name which stuck.
Quilt Stats #121
Name: Christmas Addition
Pattern: Plus blocks made from charm squares
Fabric: Solstice by Kate Spain
Amount Used: 6.5 yards
Batting: Hobbs 80/20
Size: About 59 x 72 inches
Date Finished: December 2014
What I learned:
- The pinked edges on pre-cuts make it a little harder to be exact.
- You can make an awesome plus quilt with a layer cake and matching charm pack or five matching charm packs with very little waste.
- Minky backings do sometimes peek through the top.
I also spent five hours adding the cuffs to these darling minky Christmas Stockings for my mother. She and her friends embroidered them (Anita Goodesign pattern) for the residents in the assisted living center in their neighborhood. They will fill them before delivering them sometime next week.
XX,
Jasmine
P.S. I will be linking up with Can I Get A Whoop Whoop, Finish it up Friday, and Let's Bee Social.
Hi Jasmine! The quilt looks so Christmassy and clean and I can't believe you quilted it with Minky., Slippery but snuggly. Can you believe the last half inch??! oy! LeeAnna at not afraid of colof
ReplyDeleteI love how you guys name your quilts such cute names! Very nice addition!!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE IT! Sorry for shouting, but it's so great, and you put it together so quickly. Love the clever name for it too - well done husband.
ReplyDeleteMinky is the best ever. I love cotton backed stuff in the summer, but 'tis the season for minky!
What a beautiful finish! I love the name also. I Just adore holiday quilts and I've never made one! Up until last week I didn't even own any Christmas fabric. I started ironing mine in prep for cutting :) gosh running out of bobbin so close to the end would be a bummer! The stockings are such a nice gesture!
ReplyDeleteCOngrats on your wonderful win! You wasting no time in creating a beaurtiful Christmas quilt with it!!
ReplyDeleteAnother beautiful quilt! Good thinking on naming the quilt, quite pertinent.
ReplyDeleteDid you use any batting in this quilt? I haven't used minky yet, but I would love to make a few warmer lap quilts. I know minky is really soft, but I am wondering if it's warm as well...?
God bless your mother and her friends for making all those Christmas Stockings...They are absolutely gorgeous!
It's adorable and looks so Christmas-y! I love it. I'm going to start calling you the Minky Queen! :) It looks like a fantastic quilt to cuddle up with. Congratulations on such a quick finish!
ReplyDeleteI have trouble with pinked edges and minky peeking up through the top also. I just quilted one with minky on the back and I was trying to figure out if going slower would help with the spots. It seemed to, but I can't say for sure! Love your plus quilt, I have 3 of those currently in my house.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt looks great! How wonderful for you to have your quilts so treasured by your boys. You really put this one together quickly!
ReplyDeleteLove it! Christmas Kate Spain and a great pattern - perfection! I have the same minky thief problem in my house. ;)
ReplyDeleteLove the plus quilt, Jasmine! The stockings are sure to bring great joy!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great use of your winnings, and the name "Christmas Addition" is great! Congratulations on another finish.
ReplyDeleteI think I would like to make a plus quilt some day. Great job on yours. Kate's fabrics are so festive. I have a few of her other Christmas fabrics. Thanks for sharing your inspiration. WHOOP WHOOP for you for getting it finished so quickly! Janita
ReplyDeleteGreat quilt! I also really like the quilt on your wall. Isn't that always the way? Sometimes I swear the bobbin knows how close to the end you are and plots the most annoying times to run out. Those stockings are so sweet!
ReplyDeleteIts a beautiful Christmas addition! I've still got a plus quilt on my to-do list....I'm way behind with 'me makes', too many retirement/baby quilts and pillows have been made lately.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your winnings and it is cool to see you already have a finished quilt! I'm rather partial to plus quilts and Christmas Addition is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a pinked edges fan. It's one of the reasons I rarely buy pre-cuts anymore. . . makes me sad, except for the pinked edges I really like using them.
What a lovely Christmas finish!!! I want to make another Christmas quilt.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous quilt! I love plus quilts and the Solstice fabrics suit is beautifully. Maybe you could use it all year round? Always seems a waste to me to only have beautiful quilts out for a month.
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful. Love the Christmas colors!!! I am adding a plus quilt to my to-do list.
ReplyDeleteTesting testing 1, 2 ,3!!
