Miss S's First Quilt

This beautiful quilt was pieced by my niece Miss S with my mother.  It is the original Turning 20 quilt pattern.  Miss S wanted me to finish the quilt for her.  I quilted it on the Bernina Q24 in black thread.

I quilted it with the loopy spiral as she requested.

Then I trimmed it and added red binding.

Her backing is a black minky.

Here you can see it in my studio with the growing pile of needed-to-be-gifted niece and nephew quilts.

Miss S did such a great job!

Miss C's First Quilt

 Gratitude Week ~ Day 4

Today I am grateful for my extended family.  I am so grateful for my brothers, sisters, grandparents, ancestors, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and the grand nieces and nephews.  I love them all!

I also love helping my family members with their quilts.  This quilt was pieced by my niece Miss C with my mother.  They again used the original Turning Twenty quilt pattern.  I quilted it on the long arm.

She requested simple loops.

She also requested that I bind the quilt for her.

I love how it turned out.  She did a fantastic job piecing it.

The backing is this soft blue minky.  My sister has told me that Miss C frequently wraps up in her quilt and takes it everywhere around the house.  I am grateful for quilts which are used and loved.

What are you grateful for today?

Miss A's First Quilt

This is Miss A's first quilt.  She pieced it with my mother using the basic Turning 20 pattern.  I pieced the backing and loaded it on the frames.

Miss A originally wanted me to quilt it with the spirals and paisleys combo, but that would have been too difficult with my baby belly (and pregnancy brain).  She chose the simpler spirals design instead of waiting until I could quilt something more complex.

I bound the quilt by machine for her.

It may look familiar because Miss H used a matching kit for her first quilt.  While Miss H has a pink backing, Miss A has a blue backing.

She did a great job piecing.  It turned out so cute!

We were able to finish it in time for her to take it to college.

I love quilting with family.

Miss H's First Quilt

This is Miss H's first quilt which she worked on with my mother.  It once again uses the basic Turning 20 pattern with borders added.  I did the quilting and put the binding on my machine.  My sister will sew it to the back by hand and then I hope to get some more pictures.

I quilted it on the Bernina Q24 with a wild quilting design.

My niece wanted as many different designs included as possible.  It really stretched my skills and my brain.

It was a relief to finish the quilting on it.

I find it much easier to select a set number of designs for the entire project, but I love how it turned out!

Some of the fabrics highlight one design.

Others have a combination of designs.

I kind of wish I could have kept it.  ;)  I guess it just means that I will have to quilt another quilt like this in the future.

Miss I's first Quilt

This is the first quilt of my niece, Miss I.  She is actually my oldest niece and started her quilt with Grandma when she was in her twenties.  She got the blocks pieced, but then life got busy and crazy.  She wasn't able to finish it before moving, so my mom asked me to finish it for her.

I laid out all the blocks on my design wall, pieced them together, and then quilted it on the Bernina Q24.  The fabrics in the quilt top are all flannels.

I quilted it with a light tan thread in a medium stipple.

The binding is a pretty red flannel cut three inches wide.

The backing is an extra wide Benartex print my mother has had for years.

If you look closely, you can see the birds.

I love the fabric and have used it on the back of other quilts.  (My mom bought a whole bolt.)

I tried to take some pictures outside...

But it was too windy.

So I took it inside for a couple more pictures.

It is a full size quilt and finishes about 81 by 96 inches.  I had to finish it and take pictures quickly so that it could be delivered personally by a family member.  :)  I will miss having my niece so close, but wish her the best in her new area.

My Nephew's First Quilt

This is my nephew Mr. C's first quilt.  My mother and I put together a few different boy kits for basic Turning 20 quilts and he chose this blue, green, and gray kit. I helped him cut it out and decide on a layout on my mom's new design wall.  Then my mom helped him sew it all together by pinning and pressing.

My mom usually starts similar quilts with the granddaughters when they turn thirteen, but only recently offered to teach the grandsons.  Mr. C was the first after Cheetah to make his quilt.   He is a senior in high school.  We learned that he was always a little jealous of his cousins and sisters who were given the chance earlier.  So my mom is grateful she listened to my suggestion and offered to teach the grandsons.  Three more of my nephews have expressed interest and will be making similar quilts soon.

I quilted it for him on the Bernina Q24 with the Q-matic (computerized quilting).  While I absolutely love free motion quilting, some designs look a little better with the computer.  (It is also nice to let the computer do the quilting when you have a nasty cold.)

Mr. C chose this fun boxy meander design.

I think it looks great on such a masculine quilt.

He also asked me to finish the binding for him which I did completely by machine.

I am so proud of him!  His quilt turned out awesome.

We bought a 90 inch wide gray minky for the back of his quilt.

I love how the quilting design shows up on the minky.

What a fun quilt with lots of memories.

I will always remember how appreciative he was every step of the way.  It is always nice being told that you are an amazing aunt, right?

Celebrating the First Quilt

Leanne at Devoted Quilter is having a linky party celebrating her 20 years of quilting by having everyone share their first quilt. I thought it would be fun to share some other first quilts in my family in addition to mine.

I finished my first quilt nearly 24 years ago.  Read more about it here.

This is my mom's first quilt.  Read more about it here.

This is one of my Grandma's early quilts.  It was my mom's wedding quilt.  Read more about it here.

These are my other grandma's only two quilts.  Read more about them here.

This is one of my sister's first quilts.  Read more about it here.

This is Cheetah's first quilt.  Read more about it here.

This is my niece Miss S's second quilt, but the first one I helped her with.  Read more about it here.

This is my niece Miss R's first quilt.  Read more about it here.

This is my niece Miss C's first quilt.  Read more about it here.

This is my niece Miss M's first quilt.  Read more about it here.

It is so much fun to see all these first quilts in my family.  I am sure there are more to come.
