My Mom's Blue Quilt

My mom made this quilt as a surprise for my dad.  His favorite color is light blue, but we decided to include all shades.  We went shopping at my local quilt shop when they were having a fat quarter sale and picked 27 different blues.

Then on one of our sew days we cut out four 5 by 10 inch rectangles from each fat quarter and put them on the design wall.  This one is a little bigger than the Christmas quilts. It has 18 rows and finishes about 57 by 81 inches.

My mom was able to finish the top in just two sew days at my house.  She is definitely getting faster the more we sew together.

I quilted it for her on the Bernina Q24 with a light blue minky backing.

I quilted it in a loopy spiral which my mom says reminds her of bubbles.

Then I added a navy blue binding.

My mom is so happy with how quickly we were able to finish this quilt.

My dad is going to love his quilt made with love by his wife and daughter.

Now I just need to wrap it up so my mom can put it under the tree.  I should be safe sharing this because my dad doesn't read my blog.  (Hopefully.)

My Mother's Red Quilts

After my mom finished piecing her second red quilt I brought them home to finish.  I quilted them both on the Bernina Q24 one right after the other.

I finished the patchwork quilt first.

It is quilted with spirals and paisleys.

But there is one heart in the corner.

The backing is an off white minky and the binding is a red star print.

The patchwork quilt is a gift for her best friend.  She knew my mother was sewing again but had no idea what my mom was working on.

I finished the chunky race quilt second.  My mom is keeping this one.

I quilted it with loops and scattered hearts.

It has the same binding and backing as the first one.

I love that my mom and her best friend will have coordinating quilts!

My Sister's Tenth Quilt

This is my sister's tenth quilt.  She made it for her grandson's first birthday.  You can probably tell that the family loves baseball!  My sister was originally going to do a different pattern, but when I sent her pictures of stripe quilts she decided she wanted to make one of them instead.

She came over to my house one day and I cut it out for her.  She pieced it on my machine.  We were able to do the quilt top in the morning while our kids were at school.

I later quilted it on the long arm with two different colors of thread: red and gray.

Changing thread colors is not my favorite, but what this quilt needed.  The quilting shows up on the back much better.  (Although the backing is navy blue minky not gray.)

I did the binding for my sister as well.  She was able to give it to him at his party.

Her son and daughter-in-law love the quilt and I'm sure her grandson will too.

Not My UFO--Again

In my Studio Changes post I mentioned that I wanted to finish some of my mom's old projects for her.  I simplified all three of the above quilts in some way to finish them up.  I added a border to a fourth quilt to finish it up.

This is the first quilt I finished.  My mom made it to celebrate Utah's Centennial.  She had pieced the entire center portion and hand appliqued the side borders. The four corners were supposed to have hand appliqued sego lilies.  She had finished one of the four.  I knew that I would never do the other three.  I simplified it by putting nine patches in the corners.  Then I quilted it by outlining the applique and stippling the rest.  This quilt is about 40 inches square.

The Utah Centennial quilt is now hanging in the hallway outside her basement sewing studio.

The second quilt I finished is this northern wind quilt.  My mom, sister-in-law, and I had taken the class for this quilt together.  I finished my quilts, but my mom and sister-in-law just had a handful of blocks.  I took all their blocks, made two more, and pieced this wall hanging together.  I simplified it by not making enough blocks for a bed quilt.  It finishes about 40 inches square.

This quilt is now hanging on the landing of her stairs going to the basement.

The third quilt I finished is this tulip quilt.  My mom and other members of her stitching group pieced the blocks.  I assembled the quilt top, pulled off the papers, quilted it, and bound it.  I simplified it by once again not making more blocks to make a larger quilt.  It is also about 40 inches square.

This quilt hangs in the grandchildren's bedroom at her house.

When I delivered those three quilts I picked up fabric for the backing of a fourth quilt.  My mom had paper pieced this lily quilt when I was a teenager.  I added the dark charcoal border, quilted it, and bound it.  It is about 40 inches wide.

The backing is a really fun gray that reminds me of a rock garden under water.

It now hangs in her basement studio.

I am so glad I was able to finish these up for my mom.  Finished (even if simplified) is much better than sitting in a closet forgotten.

Miss S's First Quilt

This beautiful quilt was pieced by my niece Miss S with my mother.  It is the original Turning 20 quilt pattern.  Miss S wanted me to finish the quilt for her.  I quilted it on the Bernina Q24 in black thread.

I quilted it with the loopy spiral as she requested.

Then I trimmed it and added red binding.

Her backing is a black minky.

Here you can see it in my studio with the growing pile of needed-to-be-gifted niece and nephew quilts.

Miss S did such a great job!

Mischelle's Owl Baby Quilts

I quilted these two baby quilts for my friend Mischelle.  It was a trade of my quilting for the backing of my April bed quilt.  It is always so much fun trading with my friend.

I was able to load both quilts side by side on the same piece of minky on the Bernina Q24.

I quilted them with a loopy spiral in a light tan thread.

There was some cute truck and owl fabric in some of the blocks.

The quilts were very similar but not exactly the same.

The backing was a brown paisley minky.

After quilting them I put the quilts back in Mischelle's bag.

Mischelle makes some of the cutest bags and baskets.

Four Custom Quilts

In April 2022 my husband's boss once again asked me to make some quilts for clients.  This time they wanted four identical quilts to congratulate a client for 80 years in business.  It is a family owned business and so they wanted a quilt for each family member working there.  The requested colors were to match their logo and their website.  I told them I would need two months to make four quilts.  I decided to keep them simple and make twenty inch star blocks.

My quilts were inspired by Missouri Star Quilt Company's Dashing Star.  I just used a different method (the AccuQuilt) and a smaller block.  My stars are twenty inches, my sashing two and a half inches, and my borders five inches.  So these quilts are big finishing about 80 by 102 inches.  Once my design was approved I went shopping for the fabric.

I decided to make some medium with dark stars and some medium with light stars for added dimension.  Each quilt would have two stars of each fabric combo.  Here is my first block.

I cut out and pieced all eight stars of each fabric combo at a time and kept updating my design wall.

I enjoyed the view out my window as I pressed and pressed.

That way all four quilt tops were finished within a couple days of each other.

They were all quilted on the Bernina Q24 with a 90 inch wide blue minky backing.

They were all quilted with the same loopy spiral design.

Then they were all bound by machine in navy blue.

They all received labels hand stitched to the backs (not pictured).

Then they were all photographed.

Seriously, if you've seen one you've seen them all.

Except I couldn't make them all exactly identical.  They all have a different shade of blue minky on the back.

And they all have a different navy blue print binding.

I'm such a rebel.  ;)

While I asked for two months to make all four quilts, I actually finished them in less than five weeks.  That even included breaks in the middle to make my giant purple log cabin.

I believe these quilts were a big hit.  One of the recipients told my husband he uses his quilt every day.  That's the best compliment a quilt can receive--to be used and loved.
