Eagle Pledge: A Custom Finish

My Dad is on the Scout Committee in his troop and loves to help with Eagle Courts of Honor.  So he asked my mom to make him this quilt to display at the courts of honor.  It is an embroidery pattern by Anita Goodesign.

(The carved eagle also belongs to my dad.)

The exciting thing is that Cheetah's eagle court of honor is the first one it was displayed at.

Yes, Cheetah is now an official Eagle Scout.

My mom did all of the embroidery and pieced the blocks together.

I added another layer of Warm and White batting and quilted it.  While it may look like a lot of quilting...

Most of it was part of the embroidery.  I just stitched in the ditch to stabilize it, added a half inch binding, and added loops for hanging.

It is such a neat quilt.

My mom did an amazing job and my dad just loves it!

Eagle Scout Project Almost Finished

Cheetah has been working hard on organizing and leading his Eagle Scout Project.  In November he had a big service day at the church.  In a four hour time period sixteen quilts were tied.

He was able to get it set up in the cultural hall at our church building.

The turn out was great, and he was an awesome teacher.

His dad was supportive and even tied two of the quilts.  I think it is the first time I have seen my husband use a needle.

Panda even got involved and did amazing.

I think Cheetah was exhausted after we were all cleaned up.

One of the quilts was tied previously as an example, so only three quilts were left to be finished after the big service day.  One family took a quilt home with them, and Cheetah took the last two to a recent troop meeting.

I love seeing boys sew.

Cheetah, my husband, and I have gone over all 20 quilts and fixed any problem ties.  Now all that is left of his project is the paper work and turning them in to Project Linus.  It is so exciting!!!

Thanks for all of your encouragement along the way.

Eagle Scout Project Progress

Cheetah has made some excellent progress on his Eagle Scout Project (making 20 crib quilts for Project Linus).  The quilts are almost ready to be tied at his big service day.  I think he has learned that even when doing big projects involving lots of people, that there is still a lot of prep work that has to be done for there to be something they can all do.

First Cheetah gathered all of the supplies for the quilt which were donated by friends and family.   Then his project took over the kitchen and living room for a couple days.  We cut the donated batting up into twenty crib quilt size pieces.  He even used the rotary cutter.  All 20 battings were piled up on our railing.

Panda and Monkey helped set up and clean the tables for the trimming.

Cheetah did all of the starching and ironing in the kitchen.  I did trimming and pining using the methods in my Pre-Bound Baby Blanket Tutorial.  (Cheetah took this picture.)

Pretty soon the living room and hallway looked like this.

Another day Cheetah asked several people to come help do the sewing.  He promised them some light refreshments: water, grapes, homemade bread, and homemade strawberry jam.

His project took over the basement family room for the sewing day.  Eight people worked on it that day.

Cheetah sewed around three of the quilts with the right sides together, then took over the job of turning quilts right side out.

At the end of the four and a half hour marathon, all twenty quilts had been turned right side out and five had been topstitched.

Cheetah decided to ask seven different people to help out with topstitching the rest at their own homes at their convenience.  He already has the church building scheduled for the big tying quilts service day and is now working on promoting attendance.  I really am such a proud mama.

Stash Busting for a Good Cause

{A Picture Heavy Post}

20 quilt tops and backs ready to be basted.
I am so happy to share with you a proud mama moment.  :)  Cheetah is now a Life Scout in the Boy Scouts of America and is working on his Eagle Scout Project.  What is so special to me is the fact that he wanted to make quilts for other children because he knows how much a handmade quilt means to him.  He has chosen to donate 20 crib quilts to our local Project Linus.

I have had so much fun going through my older stash and putting together these quilt tops and backs which I will be donating to his Eagle Scout Project.  Some of these are from scraps and some from yardage.  I estimate there is about 70 yards of fabric represented here (hence the stash busting in my title.)

I figure that people could have donated 1.5 yard pieces to make a quilt like this...

Or I could donate a 1.5 yard quilt top (or 20).  It was cheaper donating the quilt tops because I already had the fabric and this allowed me to use it up for a good cause.  It didn't make a dent in my stash.  It took a chunk out of my stash! ;)

All quilt tops are made with 80 five inch cut squares and a three inch cut border.  They all finish at 41.5 x 50.5 inches.  You can click on any picture to see it bigger.

I will be posting a tutorial later this week showing how I pieced the quilts in diagonal rows (the tube method).  But I wonder, which one is your favorite?  Do you like the scrappy or the planned quilts best?

A big part of the Eagle Scout Project is showing leadership skills.  Cheetah now has lots of organizing to do in order to get these finished.  It is up to him to set up times and get volunteers to prepare the quilts for tying.  Then he will set up times to get all these quilts tied.  I will help with whatever he asks, but my part is finished.
