Nephew Quilt for T

This quilt is for my nephew T.  You can probably tell that his favorite color is red.  I bought a really thick minky for his quilt back for some extra warmth.  I decided to keep both the piecing and quilting simple to go with it.  One of my favorite quilts to piece is a chunky race quilt.  (Here are my calculations for chunky race quilts.)

Knowing I would be making three red quilts I decided to buy 16 half yard cuts of various reds at my local quilt shop to enhance my red stash.  Here are the 16 fabrics I added.

Here they are with the rest of my red stash.

I decided to stick with reds which weren't as busy for this quilt.

The quilt top was very fast to piece.

I quilted it on the Bernina Q24 with a simple stipple.

I like to keep the quilting simple when I use the really plush minky fabrics.

I trimmed the quilt and then had to decide what I wanted to use for binding.

The backing fabric was an 80 inch wide minky and I realized that I could use up the extra backing as the binding.  I have never bound a quilt with a cotton top and minky backing with minky before.  However, my friend Mischelle sometimes does it.  She cuts her minky 2 inches wide so that is what I did.  Minky fabric doesn't fray.  It is just like giving the fabric a hair cut.  Once you get rid of the extra fluff that was trimmed off it has a clean edge.  I sewed the binding to the back first.

Then I folded it over to the front and stitched it down with the triple zig zag stitch.

It is the softest binding I have ever done.

You have probably guessed by now that my nephew's name is Tyler.  ;)  I think he is going to love this quilt.

I added the quilt to my stack of nephew and niece quilts and later took some photos outside.

I love how it sparkles in the sun.

Chunky race quilts are so much fun to make.  I think I could make a whole rainbow collection of them.

My sister K is coming over to sew with me today. I’m going to have her take this quilt for her son. She will definitely see him before I do.

New Minky Blankets

It is no secret that we love minky at our house or that I use minky for a lot of backings.  One weekend in May 2022 I decided to use scraps and new minky to make new blankets for the family.

Cheetah finally got an extra large blanket that I had promised him a year before.  It is big finishing about 60 by 90 inches.  He absolutely loves it.

I used my rainbow scraps and some pinkish purple minky for Bunny.

Evidently it makes a great dance stage first thing in the morning before getting ready for the day.

Kitty didn't get a new blanket at the time because hers was practically brand new.

Monkey claimed the one I was making with my black and gray scraps.

I thought Panda would want the one I made with my blue scraps, but he wasn't interested at all.

At least my husband likes it.

So I went back to the store and got some orange and red minky for Panda.

Kitty liked his orange blanket too.

A few months later (in September) I decided she needed her own orange minky blanket.

She drags it around everywhere.

I think minky is a love language at my house.

Projects for the Girls

The girls didn't need new quilts.  They loved their quilts they got for Christmas 2019.

They are great to play on and have princess tea parties.

However, they still needed something mommy made just for them.  I decided to use up some minky I bought before Kitty was born.

Some pink minky became a fuzzy blanket.

Made just for Kitty.

Although her favorite blanket is still the double sided hot pink minky.  (Also bought before she was born.  All I had to do was cut it to size and vacuum up the fluff.)

Some purple minky became a pillow case using my minky pillow case tutorial.

Made just for Bunny and looking darling on her bed.

Then once the Bernina Q24 came back from being serviced, I decided to quilt a flannel blanket for Kitty.

The machine worked great!

This little quilt is actually used as a rug in Kitty's bedroom.  It looks so cute on the floor.

The girls' rooms look so beautiful in pink and purple.  It is everything I dreamed of when I thought of having daughters.

The only problem is that Bunny's favorite color is pink and Kitty's favorite color is definitely orange.  Looks like I need to keep making quilts and other quilty projects for them.

Queen Size Minky Blanket

As you know, my family absolutely loves minky.  Actually, that is probably an understatement.  Even our puppy, Oreo, has his own minky blanket or two.  He needs one while the other is being washed, right?

The striped minky blanket shown above is the one I originally made for my husband.  Evidently, 60 x 84 inches isn't big enough.  He wanted one even bigger.  Big enough for our queen size bed.

I bought over three yards of 90 inch wide minky for the back, and two 90 inch pieces of 60 inch wide minky for the stripes.  The backing was loaded onto the longarm and it was pieced using the channel locks.

Piecing this on the longarm was definitely the way to go.  It sewed together in less time than it took to cut it out or vacuum up all of the minky fluff.

Once it was off the longarm, I trimmed the edges and bound it in the leftover backing minky.  While it is usually folded at the foot of our bed, it does look pretty as a bedspread.  It finishes about 90 by 106 inches.

I'm sure it is only a matter of time before my children ask for minky bedspreads.
