Jackie's Quilt: A Custom Finish

I was commissioned by my mother's friend Jackie to quilt and bind this quilt.  It is a gift for her grandson's wedding.  Her daughter pieced the quilt top and prepared the binding.  I did the rest.  I believe most of the fabrics were designed by Angela Walters and I had so much fun quilting this.

Jackie chose a dimpled minky for the backing and I learned one thing.  The dimpled minky is so much stretchier than the flat/smooth minky.  Using the Hobbs 80/20 batting and basting spray helped stabilize it during quilting.  It turned out beautifully, but I will be avoiding the dimpled minky from now on.

I basted this queen size quilt on the floor of my craft room by moving my cutting table in front of my future design wall.

Then I quilted it on my Tiara.  I set up an extra table to the side and used my ironing board to help hold the weight of the quilt.

When I asked Jackie how she wanted it quilted, she just said, "I trust you."  While that was sweet, I told her that I needed more input than that.  I pulled out my Floating quilt and she realized that there really were many options to choose from.  She ended up choosing one of my favorite designs: swirls with curls or hooked swirls.

I love how it turned out and I am sure her grandson and his wife will love it too.

XX,
Jasmine

P.S.  I will be linking up with some of the fun parties on my sidebar.  Check them out to see what other quilters have been up to.

  2. Oh, that is really good to know about dimpled minky; it's the only minky I ever worked with and I definitely thought it was difficult!

The quilting and quilt turned out beautifully and I am sure this quilt is going to get a lot of love.

  7. Beautiful quilt and quilting. Great idea to have a sample of quilting designs-need to make one. I use dimpled minky a lot on my longarm and as long as it is loaded with the selvages vertical rather than horizontal I have never had a problem.

  8. Very pretty! The fabrics look a bit beachy to me from a warm summer day. And I can see why that's a favorite quilting design!

  9. How fitting that you used an Angela Walters FMQ design on a quilt her her fabrics! You did a beautiful job. I have several of these fabrics but in the blue on white colourway. Pretty cool that you and I were working with Angela fabrics the same week!

  10. Swirls with curls is one of my favourites too. It's a lovely choice for this quilt. I don't think avoiding dimpled minky should be too much hardship. With all the quilting, there's already plenty of texture on the back of your quilts so textured minky is redundant!

  13. I love that swirl hook quilting design too! It's great that you have a sample of quilting designs to show people. I imagine it really helps them realize how many choices are available and lets them see what they like.
