New Quilt Blogger Blog Hop

Plum and June

Hi!  I am excited to be participating in this year's blog hop for new quilt bloggers hosted by Beth at Plum and June.  Welcome to my blog, Quilt Kisses.  My name is Jasmine and I live in Utah, U.S.A.  I have been quilting for over 20 years, making more than 100 quilts.  I am a stay at home mom, with a super supportive husband.

While I love more modern fabrics, this year my focus has been on stash busting.  I have used more than 160 yards of fabric this year.  I hope to work through my stash and update it with newer fabrics.

I would like to share with you four of my favorite quilts that I have made this year.  All of them were made completely with fabric from my stash.

This is Solstice, a twin size reverse star quilt measuring 72 x 90 inches.  I finished Solstice in January.

I finished Rich in Love in February.  It is a large lap quilt measuring 72 x 80 inches.

A Lovely Twist is a twin size quilt measuring 70 x 88 inches.  I finished it in March.  It is one of my favorite quilts because I figured out a way to make a twister quilt without the special ruler

Sunrise, Sunset was a gift I made for one of my sisters in April.  It is a lap quilt measuring 58 x 72 inches.  (I am half done with my goal of making a lap quilt for all of my siblings this year.)

These quilts have really helped me appreciate the fabrics in my stash.  I love making something useful and beautiful out of fabric that has been sitting in my craft room for nearly ten years.

Both Solstice and Rich in Love were quilted with my Janome 6500 in a corner of my craft room.  I quilted with my Janome for over ten years.

A Lovely Twist and Sunrise, Sunset were quilted with my Tiara, Princess El. I have only had her for the past three months. I love all the extra space!

My favorite quilting tip is to use a Post-it when sewing on binding.  I place the triangle along the bottom edge and stop when I get to it.  Then I back stitch.  I find that this helps when mitering the corners of your binding.  (Click here for more details.)

My favorite part about blogging is meeting new people and forming friendships. So my advice to you is to leave comments and respond to those left on your blog.  ;)

A few random facts about me:
  • I can not wear shoes while using a sewing machine.  I have better control of the foot pedal in socks or bare feet.
  • I like it best when I only have one or two works in progress.
  • I am OCD when it comes to keeping my craft room clean.

What is one quilting habit you have that you love or would like to change?

Don't forget to visit some of the other lovely people participating in the New Quilt Blogger Blog Hop.  We have all been blogging about quilts for less than two years and will be sharing some of our favorite tips.

  1. I LOVE the colors in your Rich Love quilt! How lovely they are. And to think that you had that much variety in your stash alone! Wow!

  2. I can't sew with shoes either lol!

  3. Love your binding tip! I am going to try that out!

  4. I can't sew with shoes on either. I need to feel the pedal or I'll get all out of sorts. If I could change a habit of mine it would be starting too many projects, at once. The habit I love is quilting......period. I'm not happier than when I'm playing with fabric. I just thought of one more habit that I love..........following your blog.

  7. It's so nice to meet you through our hop Jasmine! I love your binding tip. I've never heard that one before. I will try it tomorrow, thank you! I think it's funny that so many of us don't wear shoes while sewing... it seems like the risk of dropped pins in the feet would scare us off that habit... but the comfort and control of bare feet wins out every time!

  8. No shoes for me when sewing either! haha I am with you when it comes to number of projects in the works. More than a couple makes me nervous LOL

  9. I used your binding tip last weekend, worked like a charm! I do like sewing with my croc's but not regular shoes.

  10. Wow, 160 yards of fabric?!?! And how awesome that all your quilts have been stash busters. I especially like Solstice (I have a thing for blue!). Your binding tip has been working really well for me, by the way! Quilting habit... hmmm... I need to stop thinking "I can't" and start thinking, "Cool! A fun new challenge where I get to learn something new!" The second thought usually happens, but I find new things are scaring me a bit much at the moment.

  11. Great tip with the post it note - thanks! Really like your solstice quilt. Quilting habit that i would love to change is letting projects pile up to be basted. Better off basting as soon as they are finished!

  12. My goodness, Jasmine, your stash quilts are beautiful! The quilting on Sunrise, Sunset looks wonderful, and I love your fabric choices/arrangement, too. Was that a pattern, or your own design? Love it! Congrats on your new machine, as well. So exciting!
I usually have several projects going in various stages, but they are organized. Only the one I'm actively working on comes out. When I change projects, I tidy up so the bits and pieces don't disappear or get chopped up by mistake. I'd say that's a good habit to have. It keeps me happy, anyway!

  13. I also can't sew with shoes, I don't like having more than 1 or 2 WIPs, and I like (need) a clean space to work in.

  14. Jasmine, your quilts are beautiful. And I adore your craft room. I recently got a Janome 6500 and really enjoy sewing with her. I also can't sew with shoes, I just don't have as good control of the foot pedal as I do in bare feet. Weird, huh? Lol

  15. So nice getting to know you Jasmine! I am loving your machine and a great tip about the post it...hadn't heard that one before. I did this hop last year and loved it. Fun meeting so many wonderful people!

  16. Wow! I had no idea you were using only stash. I do that too....right after I buy the fabric and put it in my stash. LOL - No...I try to do that. But this...serious fabric diet. Crazy. Very cool. What will power you have! And your quilts are beautiful! My favorite is the "Sunrise, Sunset" that you made your sister. Gorgeous! And no wonder I like your quilts and quilting - 20 yrs! That is tons of practice. I hope to say in 17 years (when I will be much older than you are now) that I have been happily quilting that long too! Good luck with the rest of your stash!

  17. Nice to meet you. I wish I could keep my sewing room cleaner than the mess it seem to get into. I will try your binding tip on my next quilt when it is ready for binding. Thanks.

  18. My bad habit is that I always stall on my projects when there is only about 5% left to do ... just finish it already! lol. Thanks for the twister block tips, I've pinned it to try later :)

  19. Great tip with the post-it! I haven't heard it before, and I think it'd come in handy! I also love the colors in the sunrise, sunset quilt. I think that the only quilty habit I need to break is fear of FMQ!

  20. I wish I were more diligent on keeping my sewing room clean. I spent several hours on Monday (my day off) cleaning and re-arranging things. It looked so much better until the next day when I started paper piecing a block with about 50 tiny pieces. I did sweep up afterwards, because it had looked so good before.

  21. I'd love to sew more! Love your roman coin quilt with all the shades of red!

  22. Hi Jasmine!! I am so glad to have found your blog through the hop! Your quilts are amazing, and as a new quilter, very inspiring to me!! I guess I would have to say that the one thing I would like to change is that I really procrastinate basting a quilt. It's my least favorite step. Which is silly, right?! And also wanting to start new projects before old ones are complete :) XX! Lori

  23. I *love* the Rich in Love quilt, Jasmine! Beautiful : )

  24. Your quilts are gorgeous, and I love how tidy your sewing room is. That's a great tip. I'll definitely try that. Thank you for sharing.

  25. Wow what gorgeous quilts that have been beautifully quilted! I love your room and your storage space is to die for! Love the post it note tip too, never heard that before but it makes perfect sense, and so easy too. Thanks for sharing!

  26. Lovely post, Jasmine. It is so nice to get to know a little more about you. And thanks for sharing that binding tip. How clever!

  27. I am going to try to use more of my stash this year too. Your quilts prove it can be done without looking mismatched or scrappy. The colours of your quilts are great!
I think the quilting habit I would like to tame is that I never know how many WIPs I have on the go. I am naturally a list person, but I never write them down for fear of confronting how long the list would be. I wish I could focus on just three or four things at a time (I need variety). Why won't my brain stop inventing new projects?

  28. Hi Jasmine! Great intro post - thanks for sharing your creative space. It's always fun to see where it all happens. I LOVE your reverse star quilt. I've been wanting to make one but have such a long to do list... lol. All your quilts are lovely. It is satisfying to make a quilt entirely from my stash. My shelves never seem to empty out, however, as new fabric seems to show up to replace what I've used. ;)

  29. Your Post-It idea is awesome! I am going to try that next time I am binding. I love your Sunrise, Sunset quilt! Beautiful!

  30. Nice intro. All your quilt are lovely. I'm not aware of any habits :-) My husband would probably say I get mad when I'm trying to meet deadline, lol.

  31. Great introduction post Jasmine. I am in love with your stash closet! I've already pinned it for later use! All of your quilts are beautiful but I especially like Solstice and can't wait to read your post on how you made the twister quilt without the template. Thanks for sharing. I'm very OCD as well and like my quilting space to be neat and tidy. Having too many WIPS overwhelms me at times so I wish I could just relax a bit on that. I also wish I was more organized with my scraps. They're starting to get out of control so I need to figure out a system soon!

  32. Hi Jasmine, I am stopping by your blog. (I posted in last week's group of the blog hop). I love the name of your blog and your quilts. I am crazy about Sunrise, Sunset. Do you have a pattern for that, or know where I could find it? I also sew without my shoes on because I feel the pedal with my foot, and can control it better than when I am wearing shoes. I would like to change 2 quilting habits. 1. Keeping my sewing area my tidy. 2. This idea came from reading your introduction. So thank you. I am going to just use my stash to make my next several quilts, so I too, can add more modern fabrics to it. Great idea. It is nice to meet you.

  33. Hi Jasmine, I really like your rich in love quilt. I wish I had your good cleaning habits, my sewing area is always a huge mess. I need to work on organization! Nice to meet you!

  34. Wow--I am so impressed with your organized sewing room!

  35. Late visit from the blog hop! Beautiful quilts, I especially love the one on your header, really gorgeous. And over 100 of them? Very impressive! My habit that I'd love to change is to be more organised and neat and tidy - your craft room looks amazing! But it's tricky here - my sewing area is my kitchen table, and I like to use recycled fabrics (often large sheets, blankets as well as odd cut up bits from clothing) rather than lovely, neat FQs. Combine this with me being generally disorganised and untidy and you have a very messy house!

  36. Beautiful quilts, and your space and stash is so organized! I need some of that over here!

    ReplyDelete
  37. such beautiful quilts! I'm really taken with Sunrise, Sunset, such gorgeous colours

    ReplyDelete
  38. I can't wear shoes at my sewing machine either. It just feels weird.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Gorgeous quilts! I really want to use up more of my stash but I'm weak and so tempted by all the pretty new fabrics :D (which I then never use and they sit in my stash because I find the next pretty new fabrics lol). Your quilts are inspirational on how fabric can be used without looking crazy!

I'm trying to work on the amount of WIPs I have. Which is hard because I constantly want to start new things. I just have to get into the habit of finishing new things before I start something else!!

I love you post-it note tip! I'm going to have to try it next time i have a binding (need to finish some WIPs first LOL).

  40. I love your Rich in Love quilt especially. And well done for using up stash - that is something I need to work on!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Love the twister quilt. For real, it's my first time to see one!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I don't like using the foot pedal on my machine with shoes either. I'd say that one thing I like doing is having a night when I'm not too tired and don't have to be up early in the morning. Late night quilting sessions on occasion are some of my favorite. And, I do like how Rich in Love turned out. What a fabulous use of scraps!
