Autumn Race: A Finished Quilt

This is Autumn Race which is starting to look more and more like a Christmas Race due to the colors.  It is the second quilt I quilted on the new Bernina Q24.

It is another stash busting Chunky Race Quilt made with 26.5 six inch by width of fabric strips.  There are sixteen rows and each row was quilted with a different feather/vine design.  The designs were either from Feather Boot Camp or Christina Cameli's book First Steps to Free-Motion Quilting.

It was so much fun quilting this on the Q24.  The stitches looked really nice and I didn't break the thread once while quilting no matter what direction I was stitching.

I quilted it in a golden brown Aurifil thread which looks very golden on the fabric.

I love how it lets the feathers shine.

I will be keeping this quilt because I love the leafy inspiration fabric and the quilting.  I already have two table runners made with the same leaf fabric.

The leaf fabric is also sewn into the back separating two different dark greens.

One of those greens became the binding.

I love how it turned out.

  1. You are rocking and rolling with the new Bernina longarm! I always get a bit excited when I hear that a quilter is going to keep a quilt. This one looks like it will be great to snuggle under. :)

  4. Wow look at you whip that one up fast! Did you freehand the designs or are you using the computer part? I like that you have lots of solid reading fabric to show off the designs nicely.

    1. Thanks, Vicki! The feathers and vines are all free hand. I still haven't tried the computer on this machine yet.

  5. Love it! Your quilting really enhances it nicely. You can use this from September through New Year's, not just in the fall.

  6. I copied your idea and made a baby chunky race quilt out of a fat quarter stack. I am not sure why I bought this particular stack but it wasn't speaking to me (in either a soft quiet voice or a loud one). I added a couple of prints and ran the race. It ended up very nice! Now for quilting this weekend. Thanks for the suggestion. I will certainly be making more in the future. As a side note, our family computer is in my sewing room (or vice versa!) and my husband was typing away while I was racing. He actually quit what he was doing to watch. He was fascinated by the long strip becoming shorter and shorter. It was quite funny.
