New Fabric Buckets

I have been given a couple Moda Candy packs and didn't know what to do with them.  So I put them with my scraps and forgot about them.  I wanted to try making a small thread catcher that would sit on my sewing cabinet instead of hanging down and blocking my drawers.  I pulled these out and decided to experiment.

I felt like I was back in high school looking at square layouts with the question of which could be folded to make a cube.  Lol.  Making bags and boxing corners helped me figure it out.  One mini charm pack was enough for two buckets because they each used 20.

I used some scrap Warm and White batting and quilted them by stitching in the ditch.  Then I pulled out a scrap of fabric left over from the backing of this quilt.  I used more batting scraps and quilted it with the walking foot using the print for spacing.

I like the two layers of batting because it keeps the buckets nice and stiff.  I decided to add binding at the top so I wouldn't have to turn them right side out after sewing the outside and lining together.

These two were made with a Miss Kate mini charm pack and scrap binding from the Daysail line.

I made one mostly floral and one mostly geometric with the intent to give the floral one to my mom.  We'll see if she actually gets it.  ;)

These two were made with a Kindred Spirits mini charm pack and a random brown scrap.

When I showed my husband the buckets he thought they would be great little storage containers in a small cabinet we have.  They fit perfectly and he is excited to have them there.  I am glad they will have a use because I just made them to use up the fabric.

Now that I know how to make them with 2.5 inch squares, I may dig into my scraps again and make one completely out of scraps.  My black, white, and red scraps are calling out to me.

Edited to add:

I do not plan on making a tutorial for these buckets.  However, here are some patterns available if you would like to make something similar.

There is also a pattern for a bigger fabric bucket by Christina Cameli (of A Few Scraps) in her first book: First Steps to Free Motion Quilting.

Here is a picture of my new fabric bucket with the original one I made with Christina's pattern from her book.  It also helped me when making my little ones.

Have a great day!

P.S.  I will be linking up with some of the fun parties on my sidebar, including Oh Scrap!  Check them out for more quilty inspiration.

  3. These are really cute, Jasmine! Thanks for the tip about using two layers of batting...most patterns for this sort of project call for interfacing, which isn't something I always have on hand, but there are always batting scraps laying around :)

  5. Cute baskets! And so tiny even though in the pictures they appear bigger. Great idea to use those 2.5" squares!

  7. I made several thread catchers too a few months ago that are very similar to yours. I used strips from my scrap have in various widths. I used batting as Vegas to make them stand up. I too finished with binding at the top. Great minds....

If they are so adorable and useful too, then keep them coming.
