New Minky Blankets

It is no secret that we love minky at our house or that I use minky for a lot of backings.  One weekend in May 2022 I decided to use scraps and new minky to make new blankets for the family.

Cheetah finally got an extra large blanket that I had promised him a year before.  It is big finishing about 60 by 90 inches.  He absolutely loves it.

I used my rainbow scraps and some pinkish purple minky for Bunny.

Evidently it makes a great dance stage first thing in the morning before getting ready for the day.

Kitty didn't get a new blanket at the time because hers was practically brand new.

Monkey claimed the one I was making with my black and gray scraps.

I thought Panda would want the one I made with my blue scraps, but he wasn't interested at all.

At least my husband likes it.

So I went back to the store and got some orange and red minky for Panda.

Kitty liked his orange blanket too.

A few months later (in September) I decided she needed her own orange minky blanket.

She drags it around everywhere.

I think minky is a love language at my house.

Wedding Quilt for R & C

My niece Miss R recently got Married to Mr C.  When I asked them what colors they would like for a wedding quilt they sent me a picture of paint chips.  The colors ranged from gray to blue to teal to sea green.  I decided to make a 2 by 4 quilt (tutorial here) in those colors because it reminded me a little of the paint chip picture.

This was my fabric pull for the quilt.  It was mostly scraps and a little bit of stash.  A lot of the scraps were leftover from the blue and white ocean wave quilt.  Scrap quilts are the best! Strip piecing made this quilt come together quickly.

I quilted it on the Bernina Q24.

I did my favorite loopy spiral, but a little bit more dense than I normally do.

It still quilted up in just a day.

I trimmed it up and made the binding.  I now have a wool pressing mat that is 60 inches wide from Amazon.  I absolutely love it for ironing yardage, long seams, and binding.  When I am not using it I can put it on the pantograph table  of my long arm.

Then I got the binding on.

I love how it turned out! The two by four tutorial is great.  I did cut my pieces slightly bigger so that the blocks finish at 9 by 10 inches.

My niece and new nephew love it.

I have already made another two by four quilt for another niece with plans to make an orange one for me.

P.P.S.  I have decided to post six days a week to catch my blog up to real time faster.  ;)

A Big Girl Bed

It is hard to believe that my baby is now three.  (Even harder to believe that my oldest is now twenty!) Earlier this year she moved into a big girl bed.  Her room is too cute not to share.

I love decorating with quilts.  They make it cozy and absorb noise.

Miss Kitty loves her big girl bed.

While I love all the pink in there, her favorite color is definitely orange.  I have an orange and pink quilt for her on my bucket list.

Four Custom Quilts

In April 2022 my husband's boss once again asked me to make some quilts for clients.  This time they wanted four identical quilts to congratulate a client for 80 years in business.  It is a family owned business and so they wanted a quilt for each family member working there.  The requested colors were to match their logo and their website.  I told them I would need two months to make four quilts.  I decided to keep them simple and make twenty inch star blocks.

My quilts were inspired by Missouri Star Quilt Company's Dashing Star.  I just used a different method (the AccuQuilt) and a smaller block.  My stars are twenty inches, my sashing two and a half inches, and my borders five inches.  So these quilts are big finishing about 80 by 102 inches.  Once my design was approved I went shopping for the fabric.

I decided to make some medium with dark stars and some medium with light stars for added dimension.  Each quilt would have two stars of each fabric combo.  Here is my first block.

I cut out and pieced all eight stars of each fabric combo at a time and kept updating my design wall.

I enjoyed the view out my window as I pressed and pressed.

That way all four quilt tops were finished within a couple days of each other.

They were all quilted on the Bernina Q24 with a 90 inch wide blue minky backing.

They were all quilted with the same loopy spiral design.

Then they were all bound by machine in navy blue.

They all received labels hand stitched to the backs (not pictured).

Then they were all photographed.

Seriously, if you've seen one you've seen them all.

Except I couldn't make them all exactly identical.  They all have a different shade of blue minky on the back.

And they all have a different navy blue print binding.

I'm such a rebel.  ;)

While I asked for two months to make all four quilts, I actually finished them in less than five weeks.  That even included breaks in the middle to make my giant purple log cabin.

I believe these quilts were a big hit.  One of the recipients told my husband he uses his quilt every day.  That's the best compliment a quilt can receive--to be used and loved.

Giant Log Cabin

This is a quilt I made while in the middle of a big commission project.  I needed something simple and fun.  It is inspired by the giant log cabin quilt made by Kelly at My Quilt Infatuation.  Here is a link to her tutorial.

My quilt is made with scraps, stash, and a recent purple purchase. A big thanks to my friend Mischelle whose scraps has enhanced my own this year.  I started in the middle with a fussy cut economy block and worked my way out.

It only took a day and a half to build this log cabin.

I quilted it on the Bernina Q24 when I had the time.

I quilted it with loops and daisies because I used some daisy fabric.

I quilted around the fussy cut daisy in the middle.

I was so excited to finish it that I didn't take any good pictures of the whole thing immediately.  It is my first all purple quilt that I have made for me (and it is my favorite color). I wanted to replace a different quilt that was on my new sofas for May--my purple month.  The quilt on the sofa is the back of my Jolly Rancher quilt.

I love having it on the sofa.

The quilts on my sofa get used by the family when they haven't been dragging around their own favorite minky blanket or quilt.

Like what happens with many quilts, it had to be washed before I got a picture of the whole thing.  So here it is all cozy after a wash.

I think I need more purple quilts for my collection.
