Projects for the Girls

The girls didn't need new quilts.  They loved their quilts they got for Christmas 2019.  

They are great to play on and have princess tea parties.  

However, they still needed something mommy made just for them.  I decided to use up some minky I bought before Kitty was born.  

Some pink minky became a fuzzy blanket.  

 

Made just for Kitty.  

Although her favorite blanket is still the double sided hot pink minky.  (Also bought before she was born.  All I had to do was cut it to size and vacuum up the fluff.)

Some purple minky became a pillow case using my minky pillow case tutorial.  

Made just for Bunny and looking darling on her bed.  

Then once the Bernina Q24 came back from being serviced, I decided to quilt a flannel blanket for Kitty.  

The machine worked great!

This little quilt is actually used as a rug in Kitty's bedroom.  It looks so cute on the floor.

The girls' rooms look so beautiful in pink and purple.  It is everything I dreamed of when I thought of having daughters.  

The only problem is that Bunny's favorite color is pink and Kitty's favorite color is definitely orange.  Looks like I need to keep making quilts and other quilty projects for them.

The I Spy Sick Quilt

One day I found a video done by Karen of Just Get it Done Quilts where she talked about using ugly fabric to make a quilt that would be used in the hospital or when the family was sick.  I didn't feel like using ugly fabric, but I thought it would be fun to use my novelty scraps to make a sick quilt.  (I have been known to pull all the nice quilts off the beds when my kids are sick.  A fun replacement quilt is a great idea.)

When I pulled out the novelty fabric box full of scraps and leftovers, I realized that I had enough to just cut five inch squares for the quilt.  

I did cut some five inch squares from my regular stash of red, orange, blue, green, and purple.  Some almost solids helped tone down how busy this quilt is.  After piecing the squares together I added a skinny border which was left over from a dragon border print.  

In the interest of using things up, I zigzagged the batting together after laying it out over the quilt top.  

My long arm was being serviced, so I quilted it on the Tiara.  I still love this machine!

The backing is a flat fold ultra fuzzy blue minky I bought.  I didn't inspect it closely when purchasing it and later found that there were pink dye spots mixed in with the blue.  Oh, well.  Stains are to be expected on a sick quilt.  

The kids enjoyed making minky angels and skating across it bare footed even before I got the binding on.  

It was quilted with a large stipple.  

I'm so glad I made this quilt.  It used what I already had and has brought much fun and comfort to our home.  

Kitty loves to find Pikachu.

Believe me, this quilt has definitely fulfilled its purpose as a sick quilt.  I have no idea how many times it has been puked on in a year and a half.  

Because it is a sick quilt, I wash it in hot water.  Some of the blues have bled onto one of the whites, but it is still perfect.  I need to make at least one more sick quilt to keep in the rotation.  I will be sure to find the silkiest fuzziest minky I can.

Wedding Quilt for C & N

My niece Mrs. C got married at the end of 2020.  Due to travel and group restrictions I was uable to attend her wedding.  When I asked her about colors for a gift she said, "I love pink."  I just couldn't bring myself to make an all pink quilt for a wedding quilt.  So I added my trusty black and white prints.  This quilt is a lot like another wedding quilt I made for T and J.  I just added the pink.  

This was my fabric pull in December 2020. I figured that with 30 fabrics and 20 rows, five pinks would give me one pink for each row.  I tried to pick some pinks that would stand out against the neutrals.  

I cut out the rectangles four by ten inches and laid them on the design wall.  

A black and white photograph helped me check for value distribution.  

Then I had to stack up the columns and put the quilt aside for a little while.  I pulled the stack out after finishing Monkey's Pokemon quilt and decided to finish it up before taking my long arm in for routine servicing.  I pieced all the columns and put them over the longarm rails. 

Pretty soon the quilt top was all together.  

The next day I loaded it on the Q24 and quilted it with loops in a line.  At the last minute I decided to quilt one heart on the bottom row.  

I trimmed it and put the binding on immediately. 

The backing is a light gray minky.  You can see the single heart in the picture below.  

After I finished it up I called my parents.  My niece and her husband live about four hours away.  I asked my parents if they knew anyone going down who could deliver it for me.  They informed me that I could deliver it myself as my niece was going to their house that same day.  

Talk about perfect timing!  I was able to give it to my niece and meet my new nephew for the first time that day.  I don't have many pictures of myself, but here I am with my niece.  When I pointed out the one heart on the quilt my niece said, "I love hearts!"

It is so much fun quilting for appreciative people.

Monkey's Pokemon Quilt

Monkey requested a pokemon quilt with minky on the back.  So I decided to make him another lap quilt instead of a new bed quilt.  

I found some cute Pokemon fabric at a local quilt shop.  He said he didn't want me to cut it up and cut into the Pokemon.  So I just added borders to get it to the right size.  I picked yellow and black to resemble Pikachu's colors.  

The quilt top came together really fast and then I got it loaded on the Bernina Q24.  

I quilted it with a loopy line, making the loops as round as possible.  I wanted them to mimic pokeballs.  

I trimmed it up and bound it in more black.  

Quilting adds such great texture.

Monkey loves his Pokemon quilt.

It looks cute on his bed, even if it is only about 60 x 70 inches.  

I love making quilts for my family.

Panda also absolutely loves Pokemon, so out of the leftover fabric I was able to make him a drawstring bag.  I also made one for Panda to give to his friend.  

I think it turned out super cute and I love seeing him use the bag.

Panda's Ocean Quilt

I gave both of the girls quilts for Christmas in 2019.  So after a year I decided the boys needed new quilts too.  This is an ocean inspired quilt I made for Panda.  With all of the craziness happening in 2020 he found the sound of ocean waves very peaceful.  I was hoping to add to that peace with the quilt.  This quilt was inspired by one made by Connie Kresin.

I found five blue and teal wave fabrics for the quilt at my local quilt shop.  

I used the AccuQuilt Qube dies and not the BOB.  I think it was a better use of my fabric that way.  

I had fun stacking up the fabrics as I was cutting everything out.  1000 pieces total for 50 blocks.  

I made two test blocks.  

Then chain piecing became my friend.  

The quilt only uses 48 of the 50 blocks.  Two extras made arranging them on the design wall easier.  

I was so happy when the quilt top was all finished!

Trimming the threads off the back of the quilt is my least favorite part of the process.  But it is so important on a blue and white quilt.

My local quilt shop had one of the blue wave fabrics in an extra wide backing.  

It was perfect! 

I quilted it on the Q24 with a more open spiral.  I think it feels more like white caps.  

I finished the quilting late at night and got the binding on the next day while Panda was at school.  

The binding is the darkest blue wave fabric.  

Panda loves his quilt!

And it looks great on his bed.  

It is always a pleasant surprise to find his bed made with all the extra quilts and blankets folded. I think he sleeps under about seven blankets and quilts every night.  He loves the weight.  

This quilt finishes at 72 by 96 inches.  It was my first finish of 2021.
